Credit Amnesty last day(s) rush, why do we leave things to the last minute?

The credit bureaus have been inundated with telephone calls over the past weeks. This has been a phenomenon way bigger than when the free credit reports where launched.
Now what I find disturbing, and no I’m not necessarily better or mightier than thee, is that the regulations, section 73 of the National Credit Act have been out for sometime now (I can post the date later). These basically govern how this much sort after amnesty is to be applied i.e. who qualifies, etc, etc…

My issue is why do we as South Africans have to wait until the last minute? Is this a reflection of a tendency boarder than this amnesty subject? Why do we cry for things and seize to grab the opportunity when we get offered what we wanted? This is no generalization but a reflection on a trend. Traffic to this site for people seeking information on amnesty more than doubled these past days, which I do not mind at all by the way. Over the past week not only have the credit bureaus been inundated with calls but scores of people physically paid the credit bureaus a visit to try and “clear their credit records”.

The thing is if we don’t do things in time then rush at the dawn of the last hour. What exactly is our plan? Procrastination is mother of most….

We would love to hear (errrm -read) your thoughts on this, please comment below.

    Hi

In 2002 I opened accounts as a student that I ended up not paying for and they took me to lawyers but as soon as I got a job in 2006 I started paying my accounts and when I did my credit report in 2007 early I had no judgement. What I want to know is can I be blacklisted if I am paying my accounts through lawyers every month?

    Thank you

    Hey Sinazo,

If you click here you should be able to answer the question.
To save you the trouble though… It doesn’t sound like you are “blacklisted”.
What I would say is, make sure you keep every proof of payment you make. Your case has been escalated and anything can happen there. You should also ask for an updated balance everytime you pay. This will assist you in knowing how far you still have to go…

I just want to know if people under debt review will also qualify for credit amnesty or do you have to blacklisted?

@joan you should try lodge a complaint with TransUnion (formerly ITC) but you may need to get a letter of consent from the credit grantor and hand to a lawyer who can take it to court on your behalf…
