@Matjie you can load an alert on your credit report wih TransUnion. You first need an affidavit from the police though.
The other thing to do is subscribe to the credit report lerting service with TransUnion so you get sms'ed when there are changes or enquiries on your credit report.

Hi there. Thanx for a fabulous site! I've just spent the better part of an afternoon browsing all the very helpful topics. Maybe you can offer some advice in the following regard: i'm in a financial pickle, to the extent that i applied for debt counselling two days ago. By this i mean that i've completed the necessary input forms detailing my monthly expenses, income, indebtedness, etc. I should hear within the next week whether my application has been approved. In the meantime, i received a business card today asking me to contact a certain debt collection agency, in order to avoid legal action on one of the debts which i owe. My question is this- from my discussions with the debt counsellor, i'm aware that they can only deal with debt where no legal action has been taken. Would this notification from a debt collector be regarded as legal action? i.e. would this specific debt also be covered under the debt counselling process?

Kind regards
Jonty

Hey Jonty,

It seems the company / creditor in question has not taken legal action as yet. It appears they are being responsible and suggesting help for you, which you have already done. Perhaps you should call and confirm with them and inform that that you have applied for debt counselling.

I hope things work out for you...

Woohoo, my debt counsellor is on the ball!! She confirmed that 1)she contacted all creditors, 2)she faxed an F17.1 doc to them all notifying them that i was under debt review, and 3)she's in the process of working out a structured budget so that i can begin repaying my debt. It's a good feeling, knowing that the downward spiral is under control, and that i'm slowly beginning to claw my way out of the hole into which i've dug myself. One question, would you advise that i hang onto the various BEE shares which i've bought over the past few years, some of which are due for either sale or completion of purchase sometime soon? Thanx for all the help thus far, much appreciated indeed. Sometimes it's hard finding out that truly one has often been penny-wise but pound-foolish! La vérité vaut bien qu'on passe quelques années sans le trouver.

@Piliswa as I suggested to @Sylvia <a href="http://www.liberatingconcepts.co.za/creditpress/2007/08/23/credit-amnesty-almost-over-6-working-days-to-go-to-recover-your-bad-credit-quickly/#comment-10433" rel="nofollow">here</a>, you need to speak to a debt counsellor regarding your circumstances. You should also visit the National Credit Regulator on for infomration on <a href="http://www.ncr.org.za/Over-Indebtedness.html" rel="nofollow">how to deal with over-indebtedness</a>
You can also contact the NCR on 0860 627 627 to obtain a list of debt counsellors.
